Faith Ringgold is an artist, author, civil rights activist, and innovator that is famous for her story quilts that tell not only stories, but articulate her particular beliefs and ideologies. Her quilts are beautiful depictions of historical events and stories created through an African American lens. They were inspired by Tibetan tankas (paintings framed in cloth) that she saw on a trip to Amsterdam. Her work can be seen in various museums, from the Guggenheim to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other museums around the United States. Some of her quilts were adapted into books, of which a personal favorite is Tar Beach.
Faith Ringgold is an example of being inspired by the ancestors and standing on their shoulders to create something beautiful. May you do the same this Women’s History Month.
