    The first Monday in May.

Oh, the first Monday in May. In fashion language that means Met Gala Monday. Since 1948, this is when the iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC hosts its annual gala to raise money for its Costume institute. Each year the gala has a theme that corresponds to the Institute’s fashion exhibit that year. This year’s theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.”

Year after year, celebrities, socialites, & the elite alike gather for this one of a kind event & show off their best looks. It is, in fact, fashions biggest night. “Normal” people like you & me who aren’t willing to pay $30,000 to get in or simply didn’t get an invite enjoy seeing the red carpet looks pop up on our social feeds & live streams. Then it’s our turn to critique the fits as if the Twitter-sphere is Vogue and we’re each Anna Wintour.

Although the theme is basically the main point of such extravagant fashion & public interest, so many celebrities just ignore the theme. Personally, I’d love to understand why you wouldn’t want to add at least some hint to your outfit but I’ll wait for conversations with the stylists. This year though, I think they got the memo for the most part.

Like Fashion Police, let’s recap the most noteworthy looks of the night.

    Rihanna

The Met Gala fashion starts & ends with Rihanna. She continues to steal the show with an eye-catching, mouth dropping, thoughtful & on-theme look every year. The anticipation was high & luckily for us she didn’t disappoint. Mind you, she was chosen as a co-chair for the Gala this year as if she didn’t already have big enough shoes to fill. She gave us Pope vibes, really connecting to the Catholicism point of the theme, dressed in a custom three-piece coordinated Maison Margiela outfit created by John Galliano.

    Christian Combs

Annoyingly enough, the men of the Gala don’t show out nearly as much as the women – often times coming in basic suits. But not sure why anyone wouldn’t fit this year’s theme when Dolce & Gabbana has looks for days that fit the bill. So that’s exactly what Combs did, who has worked with the brand numerous times in the past. He wore an extravagant black velvet tuxedo embroidered with gold thread from the brand.

    Jasmine Sanders

You read that right, H&M gave “Golden Barbie” this gorgeous look. The structured bronzy-gold off the shoulder dress was super flattering, but the single braid to the back embellished with intricate accessories and red roses took it to the next level.

    JLo

JLo looked fuego in a custom Balmain gown with a prominent cross embellished on the chest & feathery chain. The dress showed off her curves nicely while giving us some leg action. Her gown will be auctioned off to support (RED)’s fight against AIDS.

    Solange

The iconic artist hit the red carpet in an all black Iris van Herpen Couture look paired with black leather thigh high boots. To make the look even better, she wore a gold halo hairpiece over a black durag. Later in the night, she revealed that the bottom of the durag read “My God Wears a Durag” at the bottom in silver, sparkly script. Speechless really.

    Chadwick Boseman

Another win for the fellas came from the Black Panther star who showed up & out in an all-white Versace look. He layered traditional tuxedo jacket with a cape that had several beautiful gold crosses. He carried those gold crosses & hues to his pants and even his Versace shoes.

    Cardi B

For those of you who claimed Cardi would have 10 minutes of fame after Bodak Yellow have to be a little salty right now. The Bronx Princess continues to steal every show & claim her seat at the table – I personally am so here for it. The Mommy-to-be walked the carpet with Jeremy Scott, wearing an embellished Moschino gown & headpiece.

    Blake Lively

Dubbed “Queen of the Met Steps” due to her iconic role of Serena Van der Woodsen in Gossip Girl, Blake Lively is known for her amazing looks at the Gala. This year she wore another Versace gown – this one a deep silk velvet gown with a crystal encrusted bustier & oversized train. Subtle but elegant drama.
